Bio
Dr. Harry Comber (hcomber1@gmail.com) was the first Director of the National Cancer Registry, from its establishment in 1992 until 2016. He has a BSc in chemistry from University College, Cork, a PhD in biophysics (1974) from the Institute of Cancer Research, London and a medical degree (1978) from University College Cork. Following medical graduation, he trained and worked as a general practitioner and was Director of the Cork General Practice Training Programme until 1992. His main work interests were in promoting the use of cancer information to improve health service planning and evaluation, and through this, better patient outcomes. He has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed publications, as well as a large number of reports from the National Cancer Registry. He has been a member of a number of national advisory bodies on cancer strategy, Chair of the Scientific Council of the International Agency for Research on Cancer and deputy chair of the European Network of Cancer Registries. He is now happily retired, travelling and enjoying life to the full.
